COMMON TYPES OF SUN DAMAGED SKIN IN ISRAEL

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

Ultraviolet (UV) rays can affect the skin in a number of negative ways. The list below describes various types of sun damage that can occur.

SUN TAN

A suntan is the darkening of the skin in response to sun exposure. A suntan that develops immediately is primarily a response to UVA exposure, while a tan that develops days after exposure is mostly due to UVB. A sun tan reflects changes in the skin that are occurring on a molecular level. Individuals with certain skin types may be more or less sensitive to sun exposure, but there is no such thing as a “healthy tan.”

SUN BORN

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage to the skin’s outermost layers. At the heart of it all is melanin, a pigment that gives your skin its color and defends it against the sun’s rays.

FRECKLES

Freckles are flat small tan or light-brown spots on sun-exposed skin. Freckles are more common on the face of red-headed, poorly pigmented individuals. Common freckles themselves are quite harmless and rarely develop into skin cancer.

MELASMA

Melasma is a tan or dark skin discoloration. Melasma is thought to be caused by sun exposure, genetic predisposition, hormone changes, and skin irritation.

AGE SPOTS

Age spots are small, flat dark areas on the skin. They vary in size and usually appear on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms. Age spots are also called sunspots, liver spots and solar lentigines.

Age spots are very common in adults older than 50, but younger people can get them if they spend time in the sun.

Age spots can look like cancerous growths. True age spots don't need treatment, but they are a sign the skin has received a lot of sun exposure and are an attempt by your skin to protect itself from more sun damage. For cosmetic reasons, they can be lightened or removed.

You can help prevent age spots by regularly using sunscreen and avoiding the sun.
